Modular Stars by Loucife Modular Stars by Loucife
ehheh..sometimes I have too much time on my hands ^^;

These are all modular stars that I made...a LONG while back, not all at once mind you. For those of you who aren't familiar with modular origami, it is the hardest tyoes of origami to do and the whole piece is made up of several squares folding into each other instead of just folding one. These stars are made up of 30 squares and each point holds three squares. If I varied and did a little experimenting I could have changed the shape and the numbers of squares but I wasn't bothered to =P

So counting up, with a total of 10 stars each holding 30 squares, that's a grand total of 300 squares to make those ^^; Each one took about...1-2 hours to make, the smaller ones taking 2+ hours. So that's about ... 14+ hours spent making them ><

When I was learning to make them, the instructions said to stick with just one colour to keep the simplicity of the piece. I DID do that...but then I got bored and did three colours :mwahaha: Screw their simplicty! Though I must admit, joining them all together and trynig not to get the two same colours together was pretty hard >< Then I started making smaller versions which was hard and it took several attempts to get the small multicoloured version to all fit.

Phew..well that's all. Enjoy~

Hi, after a little googling yes, I did use sonobe units :)

Here are the units: [link]

And they're called spiked pentaki dodecahedrons [link]

Good luck!! :heart:

there are easier ways of making modular origami but i guess its just not whole bodied like those stars, meaning can see through it instead of having a surface

I did not know these modular stars. They look very pretty.
I have a guide to match 3 colours in 30 unit balls (the five colour versions are easier).

Thanks :D Though it's been awhile since I've made this type of modular stars. I haven't been folding much recently :(

Ouch...
You should.
Girls who make origami are nice (in my opinion, they are sexy too, but it is not politically correct to say so).

:lol: I'll try :) I usually make origami when I'm under a lot of stress (either from schoolwork or from life's situations)

Ahh there was a book in my library on how to make modular origami and I learnt off there.... I don't know who made them originally or the name of the book so I can't really help you there o_O;; Buuut *1sand0s has a small tutorial thing on how to make one unit in his scraps gallery if you're interested. It's just the assembly that's a little hard

Very nice! I know a similar fold but it ends with more stunted pyramids, i.e. a little shorter. Geez, I'd show you what I'm talking about but it's hard to describe folds with words... I'll put a couple up in my gallery. I'd like to know how you fold the pieces for yours but again, hard to share. A friend of mine doesn't do much origami, but he makes these and he makes then GOOD. He's made one with 270 pieces, which he called the Epcot, after Disney fame.

Wow 270 pieces?!?!? That's insane!! O__O

And yes, it' IS going to be hard trying to describe how I make them. Someone asked me awhile ago if I could make a tutorial on this... and it'd probably be better if I used photos so maybe I should??

What you call Modular Stars, I call Stellated Icosahedrons; you commented on mine earlier, the black and white one. This is just a simple variation. The one I fold that is similar to yours is the red and blue piece in Stellated Origami though. Today I took some shots of how I fold a single unit. I made a simple tutorial; hopefully it's a minor difference between ours. Heck, it could be the same but the pictures just look different. You might be able to just point out the difference using the tutorial. If not, that'd be cool if you could take pictures on how to fold a single unit; I can easily figure out how to assemble them. Check my scraps for how I fold mine.

I didn't give it the name xP It was just what the book called it and I, not being very inventive with names, just kept it the same =P I'll see what I can do with making a simple tutorial. I have a ton of homework to do but it shouldn't take too long. **Goes to your scraps** >>

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," as some famous person once wrote. Was just pointing out they are the same overall shape, not trying to insult your lack of naming things. :) Homework, bah... I've not had homework for like 6 years. It's important though, as my failing grades could attest to. Let me know if that "tutorial" I made in like 5 minutes helps you understand or just confuses you.

Aha, gotta love Shakespeare~ This week is pretty stressful for me cos I have a lot to do >< But I don't think I'll need to make that tutorial =P The one I saw in your scraps is the same piece that I used to make my modular stars. I just have a different way of folding it.

haha thanks :D It took me two tries just to get used to making them. The first one I made took ages becuase I didn't understand all of the steps and it wouldn't stay together properly so I used sticky tape ^^;

I can always make a little instructions thingo on how to make it but technically it's not my design so I can't
